Virgo Season: The Glyph, the Myth, and the Nervous System Reset
We're in Virgo Season — Can You Feel it?
My Capricorn sun is very happy to be in Virgo season, and I wanted to share what came out of our community mastermind this month — because we had a lot to say about Virgo. We do this every month with the changing seasons. And the doors are open year-round.
♍️ Analyzing the Virgo glyph.
The main way I look at the Virgo glyph is seeing the letter "M" for medicine. It's similar to Scorpio's symbol, but where Scorpio's tail goes out — because Scorpio is about moving things through and letting things go — Virgo's tail goes back in. It's what you put in your body, going back in.
What are you feeding your body?
What are you giving it?
Virgo makes efficient use of what you feed it.
One community member pointed out that it also looks like a fish next to the M — which represents Pisces, Virgo's opposite sign. And I love that, because every sign has its opposite sign embedded in it. That's actually really important to reflect on with your Sun sign, because the sign opposite your Sun is considered your Earth sign — when you were born, it appeared the Sun was in your sign, but that's because we were standing on the Earth, in the opposite sign, looking at it. So it's worth incorporating that opposite sign, especially for your Sun.
Virgo season arrives to get things in order.
After the fun and expansion of Leo — the externally young sign, the summer romance, all the fun and the doing — Virgo asks us to come in and get things in order. This is the time when the kids go back to school, and there's more rhythm. And because it's a mutable sign, you'll wake up one day, and it's chilly, and the next it still feels like summer.
Virgo is about the plant kingdom — Taurus is the mineral kingdom, Capricorn is the animal kingdom. I'm such an herby person, and plants are medicine to me. When I studied herbalism, the thing that fascinated me most was the doctrine of signatures — when you look at a plant, you can tell which part of the body it resonates with. Some plants resonate with the whole body. Dandelion is like that — it's kind of crazy that we kill dandelions, right? People don't want them in their yard, but every part of it, from root to flower to leaves, hits every system in your body. That's how a lot of this was figured out — through trial and error, discovering which medicines worked for which parts of the body.
The high conscious and less aware sides of Virgo:
When the nervous system is regulated and we have access to these skills, we see the higher conscious expression. We see the less aware expressions when we're operating from reaction instead. Here's a look at both:
High conscious: refined, soulful, rich vocabulary, incredibly thorough, able to handle a million details, detail-oriented, ritual and routine, seeing the sacred in the mundane, spiritually aware, superpower in making plans, selfless service, purity of body and mind, accurate perception, a multitasker, good with words, witty, sense of humor.
Less aware: trapped in mental thought loops, critical, micromanaging, overwhelmed by details, hard to be in the moment, cut off from emotion.
If you have a lot of Virgo in your chart — meaning a lot of mercurial energy — you can be in your head a lot. That's just what Mercury does. It's not a bad thing. But one of the best ways I regulate my own nervous system is to go outside and walk — not for the heart rate, not for the activity ring, but to look for fractals in nature, patterns in the plants, to get close to the moss and really see its perfection.
It's so soothing to my body, and it affects my mind too. If nature can make something like a snowflake — no two alike, all of them beautiful — then there's a benevolent power running this whole thing, and my life is perfect, even when I don't like what's showing up, or I'm afraid of something. Finding those patterns in nature brings me right back into the moment.
There's magic in Virgo season too
Sometimes I think Virgo gets overlooked because we're so tuned into the earthy, practical, healer aspects of it — but there's a feminine, magical, mystical side too. It shows up through the earthy, herbal healing modalities. We might think of Virgo as boring, but there's real earth goddess energy in there. It's earthy magic. The other morning I put rose petals in my bone broth — that's Virgo, in the name of supporting the body, but it was really about wanting the energy of rose in there too.
And the virgin symbolism — when you look back at the Greek mythology, the goddesses, it was never about not being a virgin. It was about being holy unto themselves, not answering to any man, being fully integrated and independent. Virgo is the last house before we move into the other person in the zodiac wheel — so within themselves, they resource themselves. They're independent and they have the ability to do it all and refine it all.
The reputation Virgo doesn't deserve
Virgo sometimes gets a bad rap. People say they're negative, that they complain, that they're always pointing out what's wrong. But somebody needs Virgo to point out what isn't going to work. Virgo is the best editor there is — they're wired to find what's wrong, and that's a gift. I always think of what one of my first astrology teachers used to say, in his strong Irish accent: "You have a job to do, give it to a Virgo, then it's done" — and you never have to worry about it again.
And one more thing I've been wondering, completely unrelated and very Virgo of me: how many dental hygienists are Virgos or Scorpios? They scrape plaque off teeth — that feels very on-brand. I also wonder if people buy more gadgets and tools during Virgo season. I found myself buying a new tool to make stir-fried rice this week, which, fair, we eat rice constantly in this gluten-free household. But there's something to it — that back-to-school-supplies energy, picking out the perfect tools, is so Virgo.
