Where Is Libra in Your Chart? Beauty, Balance, and Learning Through Relationship

Libra is super personal to me because I have a Libra moon and three planets in my seventh house, so when I talk about Libra, I'm really talking about the way my own inner world works.

And while Libra is associated with the seventh house, you probably have your own unique sign on the descendant flavoring that seventh-house expression.

So the real question for this season — and every zodiacal season — is where Libra falls in your chart and what it means for you.

Balance is an active process

Libra season begins with the fall equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Equinoxes are always a time for balance because night and day are equal, making it a perfect time to make a shift and to strive for equilibrium — and that striving is a very active process. The spring and fall equinoxes are also yang in nature, so this is a good time to initiate things that are important to you, especially with the intention of bringing more peace, balance, or harmony into your life.

Equinoxes are also a tipping point because this is when we begin to descend into darkness and the nights get longer.

(In the Northern Hemisphere).

A good question to ask yourself during Libra season is, "Can I find that place within me where peace resides?"

Libra is a cardinal air sign, so it's a really good time to strategize and think about what brings your mind into balance. And when we're working with the nervous system, it's actually much more effective to work with the body instead of the mind. Libra will still figure out ways, though, because even though it's ruled by Venus, there's a real strength in this sign that says, "I'm going to take care of things."

Part of Libra's balance is the relationship between the external and the internal — finding peace on the outside so you can find it on the inside, and finding inner peace so it shows up on the outside.

A scale, a machine, and a sunset

Libra is the only sign whose symbol is a machine, which tells you a little bit about how Libra, as much as it's wired to connect, can also be very much in the head and not want to connect at all. I say this a lot when the moon travels through Libra each month. It can feel really good to be by yourself, because then you're not taking care of anyone, there's a clear boundary, and there's no one else you have your feelers out for, trying to tend to them or wondering what they're thinking or whether you said the thing that now has them upset with you.

We can easily see the scales in that symbol, but there's another layer I love. Astrologer Mark Jones shared this at UAC — the sun rises on the eastern horizon, and when we get to Libra we're on the western horizon, so if you put the sun in the middle of the Libra symbol, it becomes a sunset. We're moving toward the darkness, and that's exactly why another person can bring up our shadow, the parts of us we can't see or don't know well, or the parts the soul desires to be in a better relationship with.

Beauty is a strategy

Beauty is such a strategy for Libra, because when you see beauty on the outside, you can feel calm on the inside. That duality of the outside and the inside, and whether they're in harmony, is a theme for this archetype. If you have a strong Libra, whether that's a lot of planets in Libra, the sun, moon, or rising there, or a lot happening in the seventh house, it's like we're finally attuned to the equilibrium around us — who's not getting along, where the vibes are, and where the mess is — because none of that feels acceptable, and it impacts us on the inside.

I was in a relationship where I used to be gaslit about my need for beauty, where I was called superficial and told I should just appreciate what I had, and I really couldn't put it into words at the time, but I knew that when things aren't beautiful, I don't feel well.

For you, it may not be about what you look like at all; it could be about your surroundings, and actively creating beauty, visually, through music, or in any creative form, is medicine.

Libra learns its lessons through relationships

Here's the thing about Libra — it learns its lessons through relationship, and it's the sign of projections. Other signs project too, like Scorpio and Pisces, but think about it this way: if you have planets in your seventh house, you learn about those parts of you through other people, and other people will show you those parts, and we can dislike that; we can judge it and think it's "out there." But if there wasn't a desire for the soul to learn about the part of you you're not so aware of, it wouldn't show up on the outside of you.

Venus is the symbol of the mirror, and that's the work — to notice where your attention goes out there and realize, oh wait, that's where the growth and development is; they're just showing me, me. This isn't a bypassing thing, and it doesn't mean the other person isn't responsible for their actions; it's a chance to get really curious about how this person is showing you yourself. As a Libra moon, I'll be honest that this is not the way I'm naturally wired, so I have to be super conscious about it.

Relationships are part of your soul curriculum

If you have a strong Libra in your natal chart (seventh-house planets, planets in Libra, Venus conjunct your ascendant, or even a lot of oppositions), relationships are part of your curriculum — I always use the words "soul curriculum." Saturn, for example, loves to be in the seventh house, and relationships are the fastest way to evolve us down here on Earth.

Libra is also about learning through paradoxes, the both/and, and how do I do the both/and. Libra risings know this really well, because all of your planets are kind of in the opposite place they're supposed to be, wanting to function in areas of life they're not accustomed to. And how perfect is it that the opposite sign sits on your descendant? If you're a Libra rising, you'll call in partners who are a little self-centered, so you can learn to be a little more like that. It's a beautiful balancing tool that's just perfect here in Earth School. If my Pisces rising gets too lost in outer space, I call in Virgo people, and I work really well with Virgos or anyone with a strong Mercury because they tell me all the things I'd be forgetting.

For many Libra risings, this curriculum starts in childhood — being the one keeping the peace, the go-between in the family, the one looking outward at everyone else. Libra's a great mediator, but it can also find itself in the middle of things, and that can go either way. I remember being the mediator — the person in the middle — when two people close to me were getting ready to divorce, with both of them calling me, and it was the worst. I understand why they did it, because that's just kind of my default.

The less aware side of Libra

When I looked over Libra's less-aware expressions, I realized that, because the moon runs in the background, in subconscious territory, I do those things all the time. Playing devil's advocate is definitely where I go if I'm on autopilot. Telling half-truths — why? Because it keeps the peace, and if I told the whole truth, it would hurt your feelings, and then I wouldn't feel good because of the energy between us. Conflict avoidance lives here too.

And then there's the one I do on the daily — I want to keep my options open, that inability to commit, because once you're in, you're in it. Libra's a cardinal sign, so once I say I'm doing it, I'm doing it. So I often say, let's wait until the date gets closer, let me see how I feel, let me just feel into that — which drives other people crazy when they're saying, "No, we need to book the flights now."

A few strategies I keep in my back pocket for indecision: decide as quickly as you can, or decide to decide later — "I'll make a decision on this on Friday" — so you don't have the energy leak. Steven Forrest writes in his book The Inner Sky that a strategy for Libra is to flip a coin and commit to it as if it's going to work out. At UAC, Frank Clifford shared a version I love even more — imagine flipping a coin: heads, we go; tails, we stay home; and when it lands, play it out and pay attention to what happens in your body.

When Libra is swallowed up by a house

If Libra is intercepted in your chart, swallowed up by a house, that's a journey your soul is taking to really understand this archetype. And if you actually have planets in that intercepted sign, those planets are fighting for expression — in Internal Family Systems (IFS) terms, those parts of you may not have been celebrated when you were younger, and the charge of your soul curriculum in this lifetime is to celebrate them for yourself. That can be hard, because it would have been so much easier if someone had just seen them, honored them, and witnessed them, but there's finding them on your own, and a lot of inner child work, that happens as you move through your years.

Where is Libra in your chart?

Libra, Scorpio, and all the signs moving up to Pisces are more complex than the first six, and I feel that especially with projections — it's not as cut-and-dried as people think. So this season, find where Libra lives in your chart: your planets there, the house with Libra on the cusp, your descendant, your Venus. Those parts of you are always seeking balance, harmony, and equilibrium, and they learn through paradoxes and through the people who show you yourself.

This is what we do together every month in the Luminary Community.

At the start of each zodiac season, we gather for a mastermind where we look at where that sign lives in our charts, share how it actually shows up in our lives, and learn from each other in real time, because hearing it from the person living it is where the magic is.
